Why Wait Until You’re Moving to Stage Your Home

We have once again been inspired to share a blog post we stumbled across while doing research on the internet.  The blog post is by Joshua Becker, of becomingminimalist.com, and it is called How to Stage Your Home For Living.

In a nutshell, Becker raises a good question…. why are we waiting to enjoy the spaces we live in until we plan to leave them?

There have been studies done that prove having cluttered surroundings leads to trouble focussing.  One of the first things that realtors tell clients planning to sell their homes is to declutter by removing roughly one-third of their belongings.  Why wait until a realtor tells you to do this….why not have your whole family pitch in and accomplish this now.  It could mean spending a weekend afternoon with each member of the family carrying a box or two to their spaces and removing those things that they have grown out of or no longer use.  You will be surprised what you can achieve in an afternoon.

Besides simply decluttering your space, Becker recommends finding a home for all items that remain, prioritizing fixing items that are broken, doing a thorough deep-clean, and giving yourself something pretty to look at when pulling into the driveway by adding curb appeal.

We realize that working on this entire list is a huge undertaking, but wouldn’t you rather tend to these things now instead of doing them under the pressure of selling your home.  An added bonus:  doing all of this may even keep you from needing to sell your home in the first place.  After all, having a fresh, orderly space is probably going to help you fall in love with your home all over again!
