5 Tools to Transform Your Garage

The garage might just be the most forgotten space in our homes.  Some garages are fancy with the super cool floor finishes but most are over-stuffed or just overrun with STUFF on the floor.  In Texas the garage is either hot and dirty, dirtydirty or cold and (still) dirty, dirtydirty.  However, if you use just the 5 tools I’m going to suggest, you will transform your garage from scary to luxury….or at least a place where you can find what you need.

1. Pegboard

My all time favorite tool for really any room in the house.  Pegboard takes a little effort to install and may require a handyman.  But, that expense will still bring you out ahead of the fancy strips storage design companies are selling.

  • PROs:
    • Paintable
    • Can fill an entire wall
    • Endless ways to hang tools
    • More styles of hooks than any other hanging system
    • Can purchase hooks in more locations
  • CON:
    • Possible need for handyman to install.

2.  Metal Shelving Units

Besides durability, metal shelving units provide space for large storage bins or large items that haven’t found a hanging home.

  • PRO:
    • Durable
    • Adjustable
    • Movable
    • Open and easy to see what is stored on each shelf
  • CON:
    • Comes in standard sizes
    • Because they are open shelves, unorganized shelves will look messy
    • Items need to be stored in closed bins to stay clean

3.  What’s That Paint?

Relabel all your cans of paint with the perfect paint can label.  The original can may have a label with the paint formula on it but if you don’t remember the room, year, color name, finish, brand of paint or other areas you used it in, it all becomes the $40,000 question.

  • PRO:
    • Always know who, what, when, where & how on all your paint
    • Never play the guessing game with paint again
    • Your paint cans will look really cute!
  • CON:
    • It will take a few minutes to fill out information about your paint

 4.  Toolbox

This one might seem very obvious, but not everyone has something to hold smaller tools.

  • PRO:
    • Never lose a small but important tool
    • Keep tools clean
    • Makes tools portable
  • CON:
    • Be sure to buy a toolbox big enough to hold your current tools with room to add new tools.

 5.  Blower

Instead of sweeping my garage, I like to use a blower to blow out leaves and dirt.

  • PRO:
    • Fast, fast, fast
    • Fun.  Who doesn’t like using a power tool?
    • Easy especially if you have back issues
  • CON:
    • If your garage is really dusty, if can be a challenge to get all the dust out.
This is the perfect time to tackle your garage before it gets too hot and the kids get out of school.  Besides being able to find the pool toys, garden sheers, sparklers, bug spray, etc, you’ll have the added benefit of being ready for any summer fun.  Need help?  Just give us a call at 469.360.8696.
