First Day of School!

First Day of School!

What a notable day, the first day of each new school year.  Everything is so new, unprecedented & exciting.  The energy from anticipation tingles across your arms & the back of your neck.  Even if you don’t have children going to school you can still sense the power of this special day.

But there’s something else you can feel…..fear.  Fear of wearing the wrong thing, being late, getting lost on the way to class, not having anyone to sit with during lunch, gym class, having a mean teacher & just plain keeping up with it all.  Let’s face it, there’s a whole lot more going on today than when we were in school!  Saturdays & Sundays were my own to get errands done, shop, finish school ...

Who doesn’t love hosting a party.  If you’re groaning about the thought then an impromptu party is just for you. Why?  Well just think about it, an impromptu party gives you all the fun of having friends & family in your home, the visiting, laughing, sharing stories, creating new memories, but without the long planning & worry.  Things either fall into place or they don’t.  And if they don’t, no one is judging because it’s last minute.  It actually gives you an opportunity to shine.  After all, anything slightly special you pull off will make you look like Martha Stewart’s on steroids.

So here’s how you do it:

1. THE IDEA:  A friend drops by Saturday afternoon  & tells you some exciting news i.e., ...

What Have You Planned for the Summer?

What Have You Planned for the Summer?

May seems to be a really busy month: May Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day & every graduation & wedding known to man.  Before you know it, May is over & you have nothing scheduled for the kids or for a family summer vacation.  Don’t let May get away from you.  Take time now to ask friends, neighbors & (why not?) strangers in the check-out line what they have lined up for summer activities.  In case those people don’t have ideas, here are some inexpensive possibilities to get you going.

1.  Local Library  Have you been to your local library lately?  It’s so easy to forget that your taxes have already paid for some amazing treasures like book clubs, story time & ...

Conquer the Holidays

Conquer the Holidays

Every January I promise myself it will never happen again.  Then, a year goes by & I’m in the same predicament.  Yes the extra pounds are there to loose right after I sleep for a week.  And my week of sleep & lack of eating will help my credit card bill too.  But this promise is the Big Daddy Promise.  If I kept this one, it would help with the little ones too.

The Big Daddy Promise is where I promise myself I will get a handle on the holiday season schedule…….. (You can stop laughing now.)  This is possibly the Mount Everest of schedules these days.  Not only are you expected to keep up with your crazy, hectic regular life, but from ...

Putting Things Away

Putting Things Away

I just finished filing a pile of paperwork that has been waiting & waiting to be filed.  Even as a Professional Organizer, filing is one of my least fun things to do.  Once you have finished a project, your bills, homework, etc, filing or putting your tools away is the signal that you are truly finished.  It’s definitely the icing of the cake of completing a task so why is it such a drudgery?

I really don’t have the answer.  That might not be comforting but maybe the fact that a professional in this area finds it so blah might be.  I do like putting laundry away and seeing a nice, tidy closet but not dishes.  I ...

The List

While at a client’s home recently ready to start a day of organizing, I received the, “I have a bit of a conflict today.” from my client.  This wasn’t the first time I had been told this by Janet.  Nor is she the only client who had used this line with me on office organizing day.  It is typically a deflecting method used by clients to avoid sorting & editing paperwork.

Some clients would rather sort, edit & organize their garage or attic in the overbearing August heat in Texas rather than sort, edit & organize paperwork in the cool comfort of their home office.  It’s as if they might be consumed by their paperwork, filed away so to speak in ...

Unorganized Priorities

School is back into swing full time now.  YEAH!  The kids are in school!  It means more normalcy,  a solid routine each day, no one telling you, “Mom, I’m BORED!”.  But, wait, here comes all the after school commitments.  There’s piano lessons, football practice, volleyball practice, soccer practice, all-weekend tournaments, sleep-overs, friends over, school projects and don’t forget plain old homework.

When are you going to find time just to accomplish your basic schedule; working out, eating right, mediation/prayer time and dare I say sleep.  It seems there aren’t enough hours in the day to make it all happen.  It makes you want to call 911 for help.

Here’s a simple little secret all emergency personnel already know.  In ...

5 Tricks to Being Organized

Organized people are a mystery to many of us.  They seem to effortlessly handle household duties while managing a family, a career and relationships.  They never look disheveled; their birthday & greeting cards always arrive before the important date, arrive on time or even early.  Drop in on a moment’s notice–you’ll always find their homes tidy. We admit reluctantly we are envious, but how does such order happen?

Organized people live by 5 habits that help make the before-mentioned happen–at least most of the time.  By incorporating even one of them, you too can experience a life you are driving instead of one that drives you.
